  • Technetium TC 99m Mebrofenine

I will be having a hida scan next week. I am currently nursing my daughter who is 6 months old. I will be receiving technetium tc 99m mebrofenine, dosage of 5mci, and Sincalide, dosage of 1.3 micrograms. I have been given and have read conflicting information on if I need to temporarily discontinue breastfeeding or not. If I do, how long do I need to feed previously expressed milk? Thank you!

    ldlrmommy,

We recommend to pump and store your milk for 24-36 hours after a HIDA scan. The TC 99m has a half-life of 6 hours, the other meds have even a shorter half-life. You can actually put the baby to breast at 24 hours as 93% will be out at that time, and it will be completely out at 36 hours. We also recommend no co-sleeping the first night.
