I will be starting a cycle of puregon for 8 days at (Puregon 150).

I have a 7 month old and I am still primarily breastfeeding and supplementing with some solids.

Does Puregon pass into the breastmilk?
Can I still breastfeed during the 8 days?
When would the puregon be maximally in my system, so that I can avoid feeding at that time?
How much puregon would pass into the breastmilk?
What effect is there on my baby if FSH passes into the breastmilk?

    Thank you

    Beth:

Puregon is follicle stimulating hormone, the same as it normally secreted in females during their menstrual cycle. It stimulates growth and development of the follicle.

FSH is a large molecular weight peptide (34,000 daltons) and is very unlikely to enter milk or be orally bioavailable to an infant. However, it is not known if the administration of FSH, and the subsequent maternal changes in estrogen and progesterone, would alter the production of milk. It is however likely, since the onset of pregnancy is commonly followed by a decrease in milk production in most mothers.

Does it pass into milk? Unknown but very unlikely.
Yes, you can breastfeed during therapy.
Maximal levels ? It has a long half life so you can't really avoid the peak. Don't worry about this.
Even if it was added to milk, the infant wouldn't absorb it.
