Are things like Cold Eeze and Airborne okay with breastfeeding?

  • #2
    Dear Beverly,

Airborne contains vitamins, minerals, and herbal medications. Excessive doses of vitamins and minerals are not recommended during breastfeeding. We advise mothers to continue taking their prenatal vitamins for their vitamin and mineral needs while breastfeeding. Herbals are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration; therefore, the purity and contents may vary with each manufacturer. There are few scientific studies on herbal medications. Herbal medications are not recommended during breastfeeding due to the lack of data.
Cold Eeze contains zinc. Supplementation with 25 to 50 mg per day of zinc by mouth is probably safe, but excessive doses are not recommended. Zinc should not be taken nasally. If you have further questions, please let us know.

    Sincerely,
    Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP
