  • Info on the herb astaxanthin

Anyone have information regarding the safety of the herb astaxanthin. It is said to build up resistance to burning of the skin from sun exposure. Thanks for any information!

    Melissa:

Sorry, I don't know much about this retinoid. Most retinoids enter milk avidly. Wikipedia has a pretty good review but no evidence of its efficacy in preventing sunburn.

I think I'd suggest you stick with the standard sunscreens, for which we have more data.

      Batel:

We have little data on this drug, and we do not know how much enters milk and the infant. Because this drug is used chronically, and exposure could be significant over a long time, I do not believe that it is in the best interest of the infant to be exposed to this medication throughout breastfeeding.

I'm sorry, this is one instance, where the risk of the drug is probably higher than the risk of formula-feeding.
