  • long term use of domperidone

I have a mom who has been dependent on 80 mg/ day to maintain her supply for 8 months. she tried to wean it down by 20 mg/day but saw decreased output. She is doing a combo of breast and pumping. Is it safe to keep taking it at that level until the baby is a year old??

    Lact RN:

As long as she is not having symptoms (arrhythmias), it is probably OK to continue this dose. HOWEVER, I strongly suggest that when she decides to wean, that she taper very carefully over a month or more. Otherwise, she personally may have some withdrawal symptoms. I've had one case report of this. Just do it slowly over a month or so.
