  • Macrobid & breastfeeding 11 days old

I was prescribed macrobid because I was allergic to other medications and I have had c diff so they wanted to be careful prescribing medication, my ob knew I was nursing but my pediatrician said not til she was a month old, what complications can happen if I nurse?

    SavannahR,

Breastfeeding with Macrobid is not recommended in infants less than 30 days of age, those with hyperbilirubinemia and G6PD deficiency. The reason is because it can cause displacement of bilirubin from the albumin binding sites. This can cause the baby to become jaundice. In rare instances there is a risk of hemolytic anemia. With any antibiotic side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, rash and thrush.
