    Polymyxin B-Tmp Eye Drops

    Hello. Are Polytrim eye drops (Polymyxin B Trimethoprim) compatible with breastfeeding? I know they are commonly prescribed for pediatric use, but I am having a difficult time determining whether the drops are safe for a breastfeeding mother to use for an eye infection. Thanks in advance.

    Polymyxin B is rated an L2-no data-probably compatible. [COLOR=#333333][FONT=lucida grande]When applied ophthalmically, it is almost completely unabsorbed into surrounding tissues. No data are available on its transfer to human milk. However, when used topically it is very unlikely enough would be absorbed transcutaneously to produce plasma or milk levels.

    Trimethoprim is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount transferred into milk when the medication is taken orally is 3.9-9% of moms dose. The amount absorbed through an eye drop would be minimal and we doubt it would be enough to cause any problems.
