• lincomycine and breastfeeding

    Dear Dr. Hale,

i need to take lincomycine 600 mg by aerosol twice a day, but i' m breastfeeding once a day my 2 years and a half daughter. Is it compatible? The italian centre on breastfeeding and medications said to me that is not safe because there is not any study about this antibiotics. Is it true?

    Thank you very much.

    Simona,

Lincomycine (lincomycin in US) is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount transferred into breast milk is 0.7% of your dose. Lincomycin is an effective antimicrobial used for gram positive and anaerobic infections. It is secreted into breastmilk in small but detectable levels. In a group of 9 mothers breastmilk concentrations ranged from 0.5 to 2.4 mg/L (mean= 1.28). Although effects on infants are unlikely, some modification of gut flora or diarrhea is possible. Monitor the infant for Vomiting, diarrhea, and rash.

    I hope this helps.
