  • Antibiotic use by mother of infant with allergy

Hello, and thanks for this forum.
If my breastfed infant (8 months) had an allergic reaction to amoxicillin, should I avoid taking it myself, and ask for a different category of antibiotics instead?

    dmrafal,

If your infant is allergic to amoxicillin you should not breastfeed while taking this medication, even the small amount that transfers into the breast milk could cause an allergic reaction in your infant, we would recommend pumping and dumping for 7 days after stopping the medication to resume nursing. Recommend asking for a different antibiotic class that would still treat your condition.
