  • IV sedation and breastfeeding

Hello, can you tell me the appropriate course of action regarding resuming breastfeeding a 5 month old after IV sedation using Versed, Fentanyl, and Propofol? Thank you.

    Hi, thanks for your post.

This is a common combination of medications to use for short-term IV sedation. We feel that 4 hours is enough time to wait before resuming breastfeeding. This cuts the infant exposure to fentanyl by 50% and to Versed by 75%. Propofol doesn't really get into milk in clinically relevant quantities, although it can cause a harmless green discoloration of the milk. These medications are poorly absorbed by the intestines, so the majority of the drug that gets to the baby will pass right through without having any effect.

For anyone reading this, please post again or call us at the InfantRisk Center, (806)352-2519, if this has not completely answered your question. I would also appreciate you filling out a 2 minute survey about your time on the forum:
