  • Mastitis caused by Lyme?

Hi! So grateful for this forum, wondering if there's any new research that anyone knows about? I have chronic Lyme, and a 1 month old baby. I did the umbillical cord PCR test with Igenex, and she tested negative (yay!). But I've been breastfeeding and wondering if I should stop. I have recurrent mastitis and plugged ducts, anyone have thoughts on whether these could be lyme related?

    Ponderosa,

I spoke with Dr Hale about this he did not know of any correlation between chronic Lyme's disease and recurrent mastitis. You can continue to breastfeed as long as you are not on doxycycline more than 3-4 weeks at a time for treatment. Antigenic material from the spirochete is found in human milk, although we do not know if it is infectious. Ingestion is not the normal route of transmission so we believe it is minimal risk.
