I have a 6 wk old pt -- her mother wants to take DHEA 200mg daily x 3 months. Is this safe with nursing? How much gets into the breast milk?

Dear Sjarvi02,
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is considered an L5 (Hazardous) when used while breastfeeding. Experience with the use of this drug in breastfeeding women has demonstrated that it can cause significant risk to the infant. The risk to the infant is too high to justify using it. Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) is a metabolic precursor to testosterone and estrogen, and theoretically may alter hormone balance and development in the infant.
