I am 16 weeks pregnant. Would it be safe for me to start using topical Retin-A? I used it before becoming pregnant and would like to restart it if possible.

Tretinoin (Retin-A) is a retinoid derivative similar to Vitamin A, experience with this drug in pregnant women has demonstrated that it can cause birth defects. The benefits to the mother might exceed the possible risks to the fetus. Tretinoin should not be used during pregnancy especially during the first trimester.
Topical tretinoin appears not to increase the risk of congenital anomalies due to the small amount absorbed from the skin with normal use. But if the absorption of tretinoin is increased by such factors as application of dressings or application to a large surface area, there is a risk of causing congenital malformations. Unless you absolutely need this I would not advise you to use it.
