  • Zoloft Question

    Dr. Hale,

I am on 150 mg of zoloft and I have been on this dose for 10 years due to severe anxiety. Should I stay on this through the duration of my pregnancy? Would there be any benefit in tapering from 150mg to 100mg during the last two weeks of pregnancy? I am so conflicted because I want to do what is best for baby, but I am so worried about the possibility of PPD/anxiety. Thank you for your help.

    Walla:

I'd suggest you stay on this dose during your pregnancy. Because something less than 30% of infants show some withdrawal upon delivery, it might be advisable to drop to 100 mg several weeks before delivery.

Thank you for your response. If I experience withdrawal or increased depression/anxiety from dropping down to 100mg from 150mg, would you recommend going back up to 150mg or for me to just try to 'tough it out'?

        Walla:

Don't tough it out, the first weeks postpartum are rough enough. If you need 150 mg, use that dose.
