I am breastfeeding a 4 month old exclusively. Is 25000 iu vitamin a safe for me to take?

    chiredhead,

No, 25,000 IU is way above the upper RDA of 3,000 IU a day. The RDA in lactation is 1,200 IU a day. Vitamin A can cause toxicity. Amounts of 15,000 IU a day can cause liver damage. "At this point we do not know if vitamin A levels in milk correlate with maternal plasma levels, but they probably do." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale PhD).

Thank you. I’m glad I checked because the app has vitamin a at doses of 8000 and 10000 iu listed as probably compatible. Still less than what my doctor recommended, but more than the rda.

Chiredhead: We've alway been a bit cautious about vitamin A in breastfeeding mothers. I would NOT suggest a dose any higher than 2500-3000 IU per day.
