  • taking Niacin while trying to conceive

Hello! I understand that the maximum recommended dose of Niacin during pregnancy is 18 mg, but what about while trying to conceive? Is 250 mg too much?

    Eva2005,

I would say if you are trying to conceive to go ahead and lower your niacin to the RDA as you will probably be 4-5 weeks pregnant before realizing it. Niacin is known to cross the placenta. Doses that do not exceed the RDA are generally regarded as safe in pregnancy.

The recommended dietary intake set by the Food and Nutrition Board for niacin during pregnancy is 18 mg per day. The tolerable upper intake for adults is 35 mg per day. Niacin intake between these two amounts is acceptable during pregnancy. However, intakes above 35 mg per day have not been studied in pregnant women, so they are not generally recommended, according to the Merck Manuals Online Medical Library.
