  • Zinc Oxide Ointment

Given to a breastfeeding mother for treatment of a bad nipple crack. The mother also has Mastitis and is given Dicloxacillin. Was told it's safe to put the cream on nipple and breast feed but finding conflicting information on back of product stating external use only. Is this safe?

Zinc tends to be concentrated in milk, early postnatally. I would not at all recommend the topical use of Zinco Oxide ointment, as the oral dose of zinc to the infant could be very high. I'd suggest mupirocin ointment instead.
