Is it safe to use this serum while breastfeeding? Main ingredient is glycolic acid and Hydroquinone

    INGREDIENT SPOTLIGHT

    Glycolic Acid

Sugar cane is the surprising source of the Glycolic Acid used in Dr. Murad’s formulas. Glycolic is a member of a class of naturally occurring substances called Alpha-Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) that have been used to refresh complexions since Cleopatra took her first milk bath. AHA’s exfoliate by loosening the bonds that bind dulling dead cells to skin’s surface. Dr. Murad discovered that Glycolic acid is uniquely well suited to skincare because it gently and evenly exfoliates to smooth skin while stimulating natural renewal of the surface. Dr. Murad also discovered that adding Glycolic Acid to many of his formulas makes it easier for other key skincare ingredients to penetrate deep into the skin’s surface layers.

    Gianeli19,

Glycolic acid is probably ok topically as it is a normal byproduct of cellular metabolism that is naturally present in significant quantities in the neonate.

Hydroquinone is rated an L3-no data. "No data are available on its transfer into human milk. Although it is quite polar and water soluble, it also might be trapped in human milk. While it does not seem to be very toxic, its chronic use in breastfeeding mothers is probably not warranted for such benign syndromes that could wait until the mother has weaned the infant off the breast."
