  • Silver sulfadiazine

I got a second degree burn yesterday on my leg that was treated in the ER. I will be applying silver sulfadiazine to the wounds for a few days. I have a 2.5 year old who is still nursing. Should he not nurse while I'm using the ointment?

    Amweisgerber,

"Silver sulfadiazine is a topical antimicrobial cream primarily used for reducing sepsis in burn patients. The silver component is not absorbed from the skin. Sulfadiazine is partially absorbed. After prolonged therapy of large areas, sulfadiazine levels in plasma may approach therapeutic levels. Although sulfonamides are known to be secreted into human milk, they are not particularly problematic except in the newborn period when they may produce kernicterus." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale, PhD).
