  • Solumedrol IV

I have a 2 week old baby and I need to receiveA 1 gram solumedrol IV for MS flare. Do I need to pump and discard? If so, for how long? I will be receiving this 1 gram per month for 6 months. Baby is doing so well with breastfeeding so I am a little nervous to disrupt his routine. Thanks for your help!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Breastfeeding right after the 1g dose is probably OK, but we don't know for sure. Waiting 6-12 hours after your dose before you resume feeding will drastically reduce the baby's exposure to the steroid. You do not need to pump and dump; steroids in your milk are reabsorbed into your bloodstream as your plasma levels fall. We discuss steroids in more detail at the link below.

For anyone reading this, please post again or call us at the InfantRisk Center, (806)352-2519, if this has not completely answered your question. I would also appreciate you filling out a 2 minute survey about your time on the forum:
