Is this a safe medication for a breastfeeding mom to use?

  • #2
    Dear Annkeating,

Analpram is a combination of hydrocortisone acetate and pramoxine hydrochloride. The amount of hydrocortisone transferred into human milk has not been reported, but as with most steroids, is believed minimal. Applied to the nipple, only small amounts should be applied and then only after feeding; larger quantities should be removed prior to breastfeeding. 0.5 to 1% ointments, rather than creams, are generally preferred.

Pramoxine is a topical anesthetic used to for the treatment of pruritus, and inflammation secondary to hemorrhoids, proctitis, cryptitis, and fissures. Because this agent is used topically, it is not likely to be absorbed systemically. Do not use directly on the nipple. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies or case reports in breastfeeding women.
