  • Ambien

    Hello,

I have a full term, healthy 5 month old. I was prescribed 5 mg Ambien for occasional insomnia. Typically she can go 6-9 hours without breastfeeding in the night. Is this safe? How long should I wait to breastfeed her again? Would it make a difference if I only took half? Is there a safer option? I've tried diphenhydramine and it helps only sometimes. Thank you so much!

    Mommadonna:

At 5 months of age, Ambien shouldn't harm and infant, particularly if you wait up to 9 hours after taking it to breastfeed.
Just watch infant for sedation and poor feeding.

If half a table works for you, even better.

Thank you so much for your response! It gives me a lot of peace of mind. I worry about becoming dependent on Ambien if I take it more than occasionally. Do you have any information on if CBD oil is safe for breastfeeding? Thank you.

        Mamadonna:

As for CBD oil, we have no data at all in breastfed infants. I'm pretty sure levels will be low, but I'd avoid it until we know more.
