  • Any concern for infant thyroid function following Omnipaque 300?

Hi, I received IV contrast (150 mL Omnipaque 300) for 2 consecutive CT scans (75 mL each) when my infant was 3 weeks old. I was told at the time that it was safe to continue breastfeeding and that cessation was not necessary. I nursed my daughter about 3 hours after receiving the contrast. I am now reading that there is some concern for infant thyroid function upon exposure to iodinated contrast media. Our pediatrician has offered to perform thyroid function tests for peace of mind, but the IV stick is of course not simple for an infant. Are the thyroid function tests warranted? I am concerned about any long term impact to my infant. Thank you!

Omnipaque is rated an L2. Only 0.49-0.59% of your dose transfers into breast milk, and that small percentage is unlikely to be absorbed by the infant. Unless your infant is having symptoms of thyroid problems, blood work is unnecessary.
