  • Lidocaine for FNA Thyroid Biopsy

I am breastfeeding my 9 month old and will be undergoing a FNA Thyroid biopsy tomorrow. They will be injecting my neck with lidocaine prior to the procedure. When can I safely nurse after the procedure, or should I pump and dump? He nurses every 3-4 hrs.

    Kate209,

Lidocaine is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount transferred into breast milk is only 0.5-3.1% of your dose. It has a half-life of 1.8 hours. We would say it is probably ok to breastfeed after your procedure. Lidocaine stays mainly where it is injected. The only time we would tell you different is if if was injected directly into your breast.
