  • Hespan/Hetastarch - Plasma Volume expanders

I can not find anything on Hespan or any plasma volume expanders in the Medications and Mothers' Milk book. Online says not for use in pregnant or breastfeeding mothers. Currently have a mother recovering from a GI bleed that is pumping and saving her milk until I can come up with information that it is safe to use. If I can't get information better than what I googled she'll have to dump her milk. Any information will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cecelia

    Cecelia:

Hespan is Hydroxyethyl starch a nonionic starch derivative used as a volume expander. As such, it is large in molecular weight (150-200,000 daltons) and is very unlikely to enter milk. It would largely metabolized in the infants gut and not absorbed.

Should be fine for the mom to breastfeed.
