  • Statin - Vuzor 5 mg

Hi. Is it safe for mom to take 5 mg daily of statin called Vuzor and breastfeed a 6 year old at night ?

When would be the best time to take it if yes? What is the half life.

What are the risks to the child?

    Thank you

    Mini:
Vusor is Rosuvastatin. About 0.6%-1.5% of the oral dose gets to the infant via milk. This is not incredibly high, but we sometimes worry about the effect on the infant.
I'd suggest the risk to the infant is relatively low. The decision is really "just how important is this drug to the parent". If mom can do without it for a few months then i'd suggest she not take it. But if her plasma cholesterol levels are really high, and her risks of cardiomyopathy high, then perhaps she should go ahead and breastfeed while taking the drug.

The reason for our hesitancy about the statin drugs, is that infants really NEED a lot of cholesterol in their food (milk) to create new brain cells....and I sometimes worry that unnecessary exposure to a statin drug might not be worth the risk. But that is a clinical decision mom should make with her physician.

      Thank you Tom Hale.

Does the fact that the statin is only needed for one month, maximum two months to bring down moms cholesterol levels- reduce the risk to the 6 year old ? Or is the risk still there?

Also - how many hours are needed to wait/ the half life?

Thank you so much for your advice. Much appreciated.
