  • Osteoporosis

A 38 year old woman of an 1 year old breastfeeding baby (her second child) was recently diagnosis with osteoporosis (severe back pain and z-score 3,4). Her medical history is positive for Hashimoto thyroiditis. She was advised to immediately stop breastfeeding and start treatment for osteoporosis. The literature I found suggests discontinuation of breastfeeding. What is your opinion? Is it necessary to stop breastfeeding and if not which medication is more safe?

This is a medical issue that we are not prepared to answer. Her physician has to make these decisions. I would not however, suggest breastfeeding an infant while using the bisphosphanate drugs that are commonly used today to treat osteoporosis. Particularly after a year when the risk of the drug probably outweighs the benefit of breastfeeding.
