  • Cyclokapron (Tranexamic Acid)

I was prescribed Cyclokapron (Tranexamic Acid) to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. I am breastfeeding my 21 month-old twins. The specialist didn't ask if I was still nursing before prescribing the drug and my Internet research suggests that it s not appropriate for nursing mothers. Your input is appreciated.

We know practically nothing about this product, but the levels in breastmilk seem low, about 1% of the moms dose. This would probably not affect the breastfed infant.

    ------------

Tranexamic acid is used to reduce or prevent hemorrhage (excessive bleeding) in hemophilia and in other bleeding disorders. This is accomplished by inhibiting the conversion of plasminogen to plasmin.[1] From unpublished data from the manufacturer, tranexamic acid is excreted into human milk and is present in the mother's milk at a concentration of about one-hundredth of the corresponding serum concentrations.[1] In one unpublished study, it was determined that after a 2 day treatment of tranexamic acid in lactating women, the milk concentration was approximately 1% of the peak serum concentration. The effects on an infant receiving a small amount of tranexamic acid is not known.
