  • Is Flexeril(Cyclobenzaprine) safe?

Im having horrible neck pain and my doctor prescribed flexeril (5mg). I am currently nursing a 27 month old. She cosleeps and still nurses a couple of times in the night sometimes. Is it safe to take a dose or perhaps a half dose(2.5 mg) before bedtime?

      Is Flexeril(Cyclobenzaprine) safe?

Mom of 5 month old must have spinal surgery and will be put on flexeril immediately post-op. Can she give the baby her milk that she pumps while on flexeril? If not, are there better alternatives?

        Dear JenSimon,

We do not have data on cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril). We do know that the medication has a long half-life of 24 to 72 hours. We also know that the medication has 100 % oral bioavailability. The main risk to a breastfeeding infant is sedation. An alternative with a shorter half-life is metaxalone (Skelaxin). The half-life is 2 to 3 hours so is more breastfeeding friendly. Since mom is having surgery, she will likely be on other medications that cause sedation. Taking several medications that cause sedation may have adverse effects on a breastfed infant. Once you know the specific medications and her doses, please call us or have the mom or family member call us at the InfantRisk Center, 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, CDT. We can give a better risk assessment for this infant.

        Sincerely,
