  • Extended Nursing/Studies

Is there a time limit on how long you can nurse your baby/toddler using Zoloft (Sertraline)? A friend of mine nursed her son until age 5 using this medication. Does being exposed for this long put baby/toddler at more of a risk? Also, any studies on the long-term effects of this medication? It has been around for many years now.

    Zoloft

    Honeybear, thanks for posting,

Zoloft transfers minimally into breast milk, only 0.4-2.2% of your dose transfers to the infant. Zoloft has been extensively studied and the data is consistent that levels are quiet low and do not normally affect an infant. As your child becomes older they will receive less breast milk for their body weight when compared to a newborn infant. They will also be eating other foods for their nutritional needs. We do not have studies about the long term effects of this medication. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. Thanks,
