  • Reaction to kefir

I was contacted by a mom that has had a flu-like reaction to coconut kefir twice and is concerned that this may possibly be a detox type reaction. She hasn't had the reaction from other coconut products or other fermented foods. She is concerned how this will affect her 5mo ebf baby. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Dear NCCNM, Kefir is a probiotic drink produced by adding kefir grains to milk and allowing it to ferment. Kefir grains are a mixture of bacteria, yeast, and polysaccharides.

I am afraid there is insufficient data available on most herbal supplementations, therefore, Dr Hale as a whole does not recommend moms using herbal supplements during breastfeeding as we do not know how much of this could be transferred into breast milk, or how it could affect an infant. I hope this is helpful.
