    Metformin

    Jflowers thanks for posting,

Metformin is given an L1 rating-safest. The amount transferred in breast milk is only 0.3-0.7% of your dose. Metformin is safe to use during breastfeeding, and has been used with no untoward effects in the breastfed infant. Transfer to milk is minimal, and plasma levels are undetected in the breastfed infant, and 1000mg is within a normal dose range. I hope this helps, if you have any other questions please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. Thanks,

There does not appear to be any threat associated with taking metformin during pregnancy. Animal studies and human reports have not revealed pregnancy or birth complications or side effects. Changes in the body during pregnancy may require changes to type 2 diabetes medications and dietary control. Patients taking insulin, along with metformin, may have to change insulin dosage or frequency or alter metformin dose as needed to control blood glucose levels.

Keeping blood glucose levels under control during pregnancy is important and metformin is considered a safe and effective drug for use during pregnancy.
