  • Pumping Schedule with Ritalin

    Hi,

I'll need to resume taking Ritalin once I return to work next week (stopped throughout pregnancy). My baby is exclusively breast fed right now (7 weeks) and I want to figure out medication/pumping schedule that minimizes her exposure. I'm going to try to take just a minimum dose (5 or 10 mg, not slow release) in the a.m. after pumping and am thinking of waiting about 5 hours to pump at work, does that seem ok? I'll need what I pump for her meals the next day so I can't really pump and dump, or I would need to start supplementing. Thank you for your help.

Follow-up question - when does it leave your system/breastmilk entirely on average?

    newom210,

Ritalin has a very low transfer rate into breast milk, only 0.2-0.4% of your dose. It is most concentrated in the breast milk from 1-3 hours, even if you wait 3 hours the transfer would be minimal. Monitor your infant for agitation, irritability, poor sleeping patterns, poor weight gain.
