  • Atomoxetine (Strattera)

I am taking care of a patient who is wanting to breastfeed her newborn but is on Strattera for her ADHD. I have reviewed Dr. Hale's book and the threads. Wondering if there are any more current updates as to the safety of this medication with breastfeeding. Patient is also on Effexor.

Any advice would be appreciated. Obviously close monitoring of infant will occur if she remains on these medications and she is debating switching to Ritalin instead but has not been on Ritalin in many years and currently is well controlled on her current regimen.

Sorry, we still do not have any data on this product. We do have data on methyphenidate(Ritalin) and dextroamphetamine which both seem "relatively" safe in breastfeeding mothers.
