  • Metoprolol vs. Labetalol

I have a history of hypertension, but during my pregnancy my blood pressure did not need medication to be controlled.

I delivered 8 days ago and my blood pressure is now back to pre pregnancy levels, and to go back on medication.

Pre pregnancy I took 25 mg of metoprolol er once a day. Is this a safe option to return to, or would labetalol be preffered. With my last pregnancy I was put on labetalol after delivery, but metoprolol seems to control my blood pressure better.

Basically is one safer than the other as far as risk to my infant?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

From a strictly breastfeeding safety perspective, these two drugs are about the same. Use the med that best controls your blood pressure. Only about 1-2% of what you take makes it to the baby, but watch for weakness and poor feeding nonetheless.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
