  • Which is safer for breastfeeding? Zoloft of PRN Xanax

For anxiety and possible panic attacks, which is safer? Zoloft daily or PRN Xanax? Or would you recommend a different SSRI and/or Benzo? Baby is 4 months old.

    Thanks,

    Michelle, RN

    Micaela00:

Zoloft (sertraline) actually treats and reduces the incidence of panic or anxiety attacks. Thus it would have a more prolonged effect. Xanax is a benzodiazepine, like Valium, and is somewhat addictive, and only treats the symptoms for a short period.

Most clinicians start therapy of panic and anxiety attacks, with both Xanax and Zoloft (or other SSRI), then wean the patient off the Xanax after a month or so.

But to answer your question, the occassional use of Xanax should not be a problem for your infant.
