  • lexapro and a premature infant

My Dr prescribed lexapro to me. My daughter was 6 weeks early and considered full term today, may due date. My Dr started out at the lowest dose, but is this safe to take while exclusively nursing? She does get one bottle of neosure every other day. Please help me!

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Studies of breastfeeding moms on Lexapro indicate that the baby gets only 5-8% of mom's daily dose in the breastmilk. One study that look at the infant's blood at the same time could not even detect the drug in the baby. We give Lexapro an L2 rating (out of 5)("Safer") in regards to its lactation safety. Make sure your child is able to consistently wake up for feedings and is not overly sedated.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
