  • Multiple antidepressants and sleep aid while breastfeeding

I was wondering if the combination of Zoloft 200mg, Wellbutrin 150-300mg, Lamictal 150mg And lunesta is too much of a risk to the baby to continue breastfeeding. What would some other alternatives be?

    Lh2012,

How old is your infant? What is the dose of Lunesta?

        Lh2012,

Zoloft is an L2-limited data-probably compatible. Only 0.4-2.2% of your dose transfers into breast milk. Monitor for sedation or irritability, not waking to feed/poor feeding and weight gain.

Wellbutrin is an L3-limited data-probably compatible. Only 0.11-1.99% of your dose transfers into breast milk. There have been 2 case reports of seizures with this medication. Monitor for sedation or irritability, seizures, not waking to feed/poor feeding and weight gain, reduced milk supply.

Lamictal is an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers is 9.2-18.27% of your dose. Monitor for sedation or irritability, not waking to feed/poor feeding, weight gain and rash. Based on clinical symptoms some infants may require monitoring of liver enzymes or CBC. If your dose increases or baby becomes symptomatic check Lamictal levels in your infant.

Lunesta is an L3-no data-probably compatible. We do not have any studies regarding the transfer of this medication into breast milk. "This drug should be avoided in mothers with infants subject to apnea. Infant withdrawal has been reported following long-term use of benzodiazepines and could presumably occur with this agent as well. In mothers with healthy, older infants (>2 months), there is probably little risk. Observe for poor feeding, apnea, and sedation." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale PhD).

All of your medications are within a normal dose range. The Lunesta should not be used in infants before 2 months of age. The combination of medications with the same side effects does increase the risks of your infant developing those stated side effects. As long as your infant is not symptomatic you could continue to nurse. If your infant does become symptomatic try half breast milk and half formula and see if symptoms improve, and as your baby gets older slowly increase to full feedings as tolerated.

I wouldn't advise you to do this. You need to feed the baby milk that is as pure as they come, any kind of drug is going to adversely affect the development in your child.
Before taking this any further I suggest that you consult a doctor.
