  • Zonisamide

I have a Mom with 16 day old baby who has been taking Zonisamide through out her pregnancy and now as a breastfeeding Mom. Is there any new data available on this drug or is it still considered hazardous to take during breastfeeding.

    Dallie:

We have three studies all of which confirm a high RID 28.88% - 44.1%. I still consider it highly risky for the infant.

Things to watch for: Somnolence, dizziness, headache, agitation, confusion, speech abnormalities, diplopia, kidney stones, nausea, anorexia, abnormal gait, paresthesias, leukopenia, Steven-Johnson syndrome, abrupt withdrawal can lead to seizures in epilepsy patients (wean slowly).
