  • BCG for bladder cancer

I have read the entry for BCG and see mention of it's use for bladder cancer but not whether it is still compatible if instilled into the bladder. I'm assuming so but would appreciate clarification. Thank you

    WJones,

We do not have any studies on the transfer of the BCG into human milk. I spoke with Dr Hale about this and he stated that the BCG bacteria used in the bladder is a live attenuated bacteria so it runs the risk of transmitting BCG to others, and might possibly transfer through the breast milk. It appears the treatment is prolonged up to a year and risk of transmission might be high. We cannot advise the safety of this treatment and breastfeeding.

      WJones:

Slight correction, BCG used in the bladder is a live attenuated bacteria. Not virus.
