  • Vancomycin IV

    Hello,
I'm currently in the hospital for a severe case of mastitis/breast abscess. After administering Vancomycin (IV) yesterday, the doctor informed me that I would need to pump and dump for 3-4 days. Is this the recommendation? My daughter is 7 weeks old.
    Thank you.

    SBC77,

Vancomycin is rated L1-limited data-compatible. The amount transferred into breast milk if 6.7% of your dose. Vancomycin is suitable to use during breastfeeding. Transfer to milk is minimal since it is a relatively large molecule, and oral absorption is poor. Possible side effects are vomiting, diarrhea, rash and thrush, although there have been no reports of harm to the breastfed infant.

    I hope this helps.
