  • Levaquin and breastfeeding

I have a sinus infection and bronchitis. My doctor prescribed Levaquin 500 mg twice a day for 7 days. He recommended that I wait 4-6 hours after taking it to breastfeed. I wanted to double check this. Is waiting 4-6 hours good or should I pump and discard while taking it? My baby is only 4 weeks old, so I’m trying to be very cautious.

    Sasanator03,

Levaquin is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. While fluoroquinolones are not the preferred antibiotics of choice, short term use in normal doses maybe ok when needed as long as your infant is not symptomatic. We do recommend waiting a minimum of 4-6 hours to nurse after a dose (half life of levaquin is 6-8 hours),and monitor your infant for vomiting, diarrhea, rash and thrush. Hope this helps.
