  • Cefixime or Ceftibuten during Breastfeeding?

I'm in Germany visiting family and have developed tonsilitis. I went to the doctor and he wanted to prescribe Cefixime or Ceftibuten, but when I told him I'm still nursing (my daughter is 22 months) he said no, those are listed as not safe for nursing and prescribed Penicillin instead.

I looked on LactMed and there isn't a lot of information on these but they are said to be ok because they're in the Cephalosporin category. I'm going to take the Penicillin for now, but he said they might not work as fast. In case I need another option, could you please tell me if the Cefixime or Ceftibuten would be acceptable?

    Thanks so much.

    Marlen:

Both cefixime and ceftibuten are fine for breastfeeding mothers. They are just cephalosporins. We have little data on either of these but their levels in milk will be low.
