  • Midazolam and Fentanyl IV Sedation and Breastfeeding

    Hello

I have a 3 month old I am exclusively breastfeeding and I am scheduled for a colonoscopy in two weeks. My dr will be using Midazolam and Fentanyl as the drugs and said I will have to pump and dump for 48 hours after the procedure. This seems like a very long time to me so I am looking for a second opinion on how long I am required to wait to breastfeed after I come to from the sedation?
    Thank you!

    TiffanyFrancis,

Midazolam is rated and L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount transferred into breast milk is 0.004-0.6% of your dose. The half life is 2-5 hours. We recommend waiting 4 hours after your procedure to breastfeed provided you are fully awake at that time and your infant does not have a history of apnea.

Fentanyl is also a L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount transferred into milk is 2.9-5% of your dose. The half life is 2-4 hours. Wait 4 hours to resume breastfeeding.
