  • Taking Ibuprofen while breastfeeding a baby with haemophilia

    Hi,

I'm a healthcare professional and I was asked by a breastfeeding mum if she could take ibuprofen or NSAIDS while she was breastfeeding her baby (two weeks old) who has also been diagnosed with haemophilia? Im not sure what type of haemophilia the baby has been diagnosed with. Given the relative infant dose for ibuprofen is less than 1% can this mum still take ibuprofen? She has been told not to administer NSAIDS directly to her baby.

    Thanks
    Susan

While I agree that the amount of ibuprofen in breastmilk is exceedingly low, it would pose some problem for an infant with a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia. I'd suggest the mother use acetaminophen instead. However, the physician managing the infant should be consulted first, before using ibuprofen or any NSAID.
