  • Thiocolchicoside

A breastfeeding mother of a 2 year old child needs intramuscular injections of thiocolchicoside and diclofenac. I cannot find any references on thiocolchicoside. Is it safe?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

There are no studies published that specifically examine the transfer of thiocolchicoside into breastmilk. However, there are several properties of the drug that suggest it will be fairly safe in a breastfeeding woman. First, the molecular weight is >400, which generally means that it will have a hard time crossing the lactocyte barrier and entering the milk. Secondly, the oral bioavailability is only about 25% which means that any drug in the breastmilk will be poorly absorbed by the baby. If the mother breastfeeds while on this drug, have her watch the baby for new rashes or changes in the baby's wakefulness. At therapeutic doses, this drug can lower a person's seizure threshold and exacerbate a pre-existing seizure disorder. It is not clear what the effect of incidental exposure via the breastmilk will have, but it is probably not a good idea to use this around a baby who has been diagnosed with a seizure disorder.

For anyone reading this, please post again or call us at the InfantRisk Center, (806)352-2519, if this has not completely answered your question. I would also appreciate you filling out a 2 minute survey about your time on the forum:
