  • Meloxicam

    Dear Dr. Hale,

I am working with a mom who has been prescribed Meloxicam for a hip problem. Do you have any advice for how she can minimize any effects on her baby. She is nursing a 16 month old a few times a day. Her other alternative is oxycodone which she would prefer not to use.

    Many thanks, P Wilkey

    Hi, thanks for your post.

This medication has a long half-life, so it is not possible to schedule feedings around her dose. We do not expect this medication to be a problem in a 16 month old; toddlers get much less milk relative to their body weights than infants. There are also no documented long-term problems associated with incidental NSAID exposure through breastmilk. I believe that the best choice is for the mom to take her medication as prescribed and breastfeed as normal.

We have a statement about NSAIDs posted on our MommyMeds website if you would find that helpful in communicating with your patient.
