  • Soma while breastfeeding

Is it safe to take one soma once a week to help with neck spasms? I EBF a five month old full term baby that weighs close to 17 lbs.

    Hi, thanks for your post.

We give Soma an intermediate safety rating ("probably compatible"). Studies have shown that babies get about 1-7% of the mother's dose via the breastmilk. While this level of exposure has not resulted in adverse effects in the infants studied, there is still the potential for excessive sleepiness or breathing difficulties in babies. If you use this medication, watch carefully for changes in your baby's wakefulness and activity level. If you don't see any problems, then you can consider this drug to be safe enough for your situation. There are no hidden dangers to this drug that we know of.

Please call us at the InfantRisk Center if this has not completely answered your question.*(806)352-2519
