Oxycontin while breastfeeding a toddler

My pain management doctor has concerns about me taking oxycontin while breastfeeding. I am currently taking 15 mg BID and am nursing my 2 year old once in the morning for a short time. I have read that taking less than 30 mg a day is safe. Is that true?

Oxycodone is rated an L3-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 1-8% of your dose. We do not recommend exceeding 30-40mg in 24 hours. Normal doses are 5mg, 7.5mg, and 10mg doses spread throughout the day. A dose of 15 mg dose at one time is a lot for a child to metabolize. We would recommend waiting about 8 hours after this high dose to nurse and monitor your infant for sedation, slowed breathing rate, apnea, poor feedings, poor wt gain and constipation.

It is not short attacking it is time released oxycontin not immediate release oxycodone.

This should be ok. We still recommend taking it after nursing, but the timed release will only be small amounts released throughout the day. Monitor for side effects.
