I am taking 10mg Presnisone and 200mg Hydroxychloroquine every day. I breastfeed my baby 4 hours after I take the drugs. Should I pump and dump some breast milk before I breastfeed?
Thank you.
The half-life of prednisone is 2-3 hours and it takes 6 half-lives to be completely out of your system, only 1.8-5.3% of your dose transfers into milk. The only trouble with steroids is if they are used at high doses (greater than 40mg) for prolonged periods of time. If you were taking 40mg a day we would recommend waiting 4 hours to breastfeed after a dose and you are already doing that so potentially 75% of the medication is out.The half-life of hydroxychloroquine is >40days, but only 2.9% of your dose is passed into the breast milk.
